    May 3, 2002 (pre trip)

I wanted to put a couple of hours on the trike this morning after yesterdays long ride on the Elite, but mother nature had a special treat in store for me this morning.

    It was F-F-F-F-F-Friggin F-F-F-F-F-F-Cold man.

Minus 14 degrees C (7 degrees F) with fresh snow and the roads were covered with ice. I figured that I had better get used to riding the trike in weather like this because I can’t count on perfect conditions while on route.

Easier said than done. After 40 minutes my toes were past the pain stage well into the numb stage (why do they always put all those holes near the toes of cycling shoes??). And my fingers were freezing stiff under my fleece mitts. So I bailed.

I learned one kind of cool thing though – when the tires of the trike are filled to the recommended 70 psi, rather than 20 psi, it’s a whole lot faster! Even over ice. I think I just may be able to eek out another 1 or maybe 2 km per hour average! This is good news.

I’ll finish my training today with a 2.5 hour run – INSIDE!!!
