Following the same general proportions of the three Ironman events (swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles), I plan to cycle a total of 800 miles, run 200 miles and swim around 10 miles from my cabin on Big Mountain in Whitefish, Montana to the 2002 IRONMAN triathlon on June 8 in Provo, Utah. This ridiculous trip will probably take somewhere around 2 weeks. I would like to get into Provo around the first of June to give me 5 to 7 days to recover before racing in the Ironman. My proposed departure date is May 19, 2002. At this point, I am planning on cycling between 50 to 60 miles per day, then getting off the recumbent trike and running with it for around 10 to 15 miles. The trike has been modified to allow me to use it as a push cart of a sort when I’m not peddling the beast. And a beast it is! Weighing in at slightly over 60 pounds with all of my gear included (tent sleeping bag, clothes, etc), it’s a behemoth compared to my svelte 16 pound triathlon bike that I will be racing with at Ironman. Details and photos of the trike can be found here. I would like to swim the required 10 miles in the various lakes that I will be traveling by, but I need HELP! If you are near a lake on my route or know of someone, I could sure use a hand. For safety reasons, I would like someone to escort me in a row boat, kayak, or canoe as I swim. If I can’t find assistance, then I’ll be spending hours swimming back and fourth in local swimming pools en route. At 7:00 am on Saturday, June 8, I’ll be jumping into Utah lake with about 2000 fellow triathletes to swim the one loop 2.4 mile swim course. Then it’s onto the bike for a 112 mile spin and I finish with running a marathon. Then I have a beer and go to bed. This will be my second Ironman – I raced Ironman Florida in Nov, 01 and just missed first place by 986. Twelve hours and forty minutes. Not bad for my first attempt.
